Indian Students Recalibrate Overseas Medical Choices as New Destinations Gain Ground

4 min readNew DelhiUpdated: Jun 2, 2026 09:59 PM IST Seeking to reassure students that the platform remained functional, the CBSE added, “Our teams remain vigilant and responsive to ensure our dearest students are facilitated in all ways possible.”As thousands of Class 12 students logged in on Tuesday into Central Board of Secondary Education’s (CBSE) newly-launched re-evaluation portal, the Board said the portal was hit by multiple cyberattack attempts, including a denial-of-service attack that generated nearly 1.5 million hits within two minutes. The attacks came on the first day the Board opened its online window for students seeking verification of marks and re-evaluation of answers under a revamped post-result scrutiny process. The portal, which had experienced intermittent glitches earlier in the day, remained operational despite the attempted disruptions, according to CBSE.In a statement posted on X, the Board said that “malicious actors” had attempted to overwhelm its systems through a barrage of cyberattacks. The most significant incident, it said, was a denial-of-service attack that flooded the portal with roughly 1.5 million hits in a span of two minutes. The Board also reported more than one lakh attempts at unauthorised file access during the same period. “While thousands of students accessed the CBSE re-evaluation portal today, malicious actors attempted to disrupt services through a barrage of cyberattacks,” the Board said. Seeking to reassure students that the platform remained functional, the CBSE added, “Our teams remain vigilant and responsive to ensure our dearest students are facilitated in all ways possible.” The launch of the Post-Result Activities portal came a day later than originally scheduled. The portal, which CBSE had announced would open on June 1 for students seeking verification of marks and re-evaluation, remained inaccessible throughout Monday, prompting complaints from students and school principals. The portal eventually went live at 4 am on Tuesday and will remain open until midnight on June 6. The delay came amid mounting concerns over errors in this year’s Class 12 results linked to the Board’s first-time implementation of On-Screen Marking (OSM), a digital evaluation system. With university admission and counselling deadlines approaching, students said the disruption added to uncertainty over the re-evaluation process.Story continues below this ad A CBSE official, speaking on condition of anonymity, had told The Indian Express on Monday that technical teams were working to stabilise the platform. “The portal will open soon. IIT Madras and IIT Kanpur teams are working closely with us to make the platform as robust as possible,” the official had said, acknowledging the inconvenience caused to students. By 3 pm on Tuesday, more than 16,000 students had successfully submitted applications through the portal, while the system was simultaneously supporting over 8,000 users, the CBSE said. The portal allows students who have already obtained scanned copies of their evaluated answer books to seek redress for issues such as missing pages, missing supplementary sheets, blurred scans, incorrect answer books, evaluation against a different question paper set, and other discrepancies. Students may also request re-evaluation of specific answers if dissatisfied with the marking. As part of the process, students are required to log into the CBSE portal using their credentials and Aadhaar number. Applications and fee payments are being accepted exclusively online.Story continues below this ad The Board said it had made adjustments to the platform after receiving feedback from students. Among the changes was an extension of session time limits to make the application process “more convenient and seamless”. The launch of the portal comes amid heightened scrutiny of the Board’s examination and evaluation processes. This year, CBSE introduced a revised mechanism that allows students to first access scanned

Help scientists find spacetime warps in these Euclid Space Telescope images

(Image credit: Celestron) The Celestron NexStar 8SE is the largest in the range of the best-selling NexStar telescopes. It's hailed by Celestron as the 'world's most beloved telescope', and it tops many of our buying advice on the best telescopes, including the top-overall choice as the best telescopes for deep space and the best telescopes for seeing planets guides. The unmistakable orange-colored Celestron NexStar 8SE is without doubt a brilliantly performing telescope, and such performance is rarely discounted. It makes this Amazon telescope deal one to highlight. The Celestron NexStar 8SE has $200 off and is down to $1,499, its lowest price of the year. Even with Amazon Prime Day coming in June, we think it's unlikely to go any lower.Save $200 on the Celestron NexStar 8SE, its best price of the year at Amazon. In our review, our expert tester Jase Parnell-Brookes awarded it an impressive 4.5 out of 5-star score. Although they noted it comes in with an MSRP that might put new stargazers off, Jase reckoned it was a worthy investment and a fantastic scope. It's not only suitable for a beginner but has plenty to offer the intermediate or advanced sky watcher.Amazon has the NexStar 8SE marked as limited stock and at this price it could sell out fast. However, Walmart is price-matching the Amazon deal along with Adorama, should you wish to purchase your it elsewhere.Paul Brett is a deals writer at Space, Live Science, and across the Sports and Knowledge titles at Future. Paul is an award-winning photographer, having won the Mountain Photographer of the Year title at Trail Magazine. A huge fan of photography and cameras, he can be found on top of Scotland's mountains, wild camping, waiting to capture the Northern Lights or a cloud inversion. We've got you covered with reviews and rankings of the best telescopes, binoculars, star projectors, cameras, drones, Lego, streaming and more.Image 1 of 3The Celestron NexStar 8 SE looks stunning with its iconic Orange optical tube.(Image credit: Jason Parnell-Brookes)Considering Parnell-Brookes reviewed the NexStar 8SE telescope at full MSRP, this Amazon deal is well worth consideration because you not only get one of the best-looking telescopes but with its high-quality Schmidt-Cassegrain optics, you get beautifully clear views of the night sky. It's ideal for viewing both planets and distant objects like galaxies, nebulas and star clusters. Plus, it lets in 78% more light than its NexStar 6SE sibling thanks to its large 8-inch aperture.Although for a beginner it is a considerable investment, it suits all abilities. Features like the motorized single fork arm and handheld remote control functionality mean it's easy to set up and start stargazing even for those unfamiliar with the night sky.Parnell-Brookes also noted the smoothness of the motor, and with the help of the Celestron SkyAlign app, you can align the scope using three bright stars and enjoy automated viewing almost instantly in your stargazing journey.Smaller aperture versions are available at 4, 5 and 6 inches with graduating costs. Of course, the smaller you go, the less light captured, thus making your views less awe-inspiring with each drop in aperture.Key features: 8-inch (203.2mm) aperture, 80-inch (2032mm) focal length, f/10 focal ratio, 180x highest useful magnification, 32 lbs (14.48 kg) weight, two-year warranty.Launched: June 2005Price history: Before today's telescope deal, the best price we've seen on the Celestron NexStar 8 SE telescope was $1,299 during the Black Friday sales of 2024. The MSRP is $1,699, which makes the current on-sale price of $1,499 a significant saving on what is a seldom-discounted model.Price comparison: Amazon: $1,499 | Adorama: $1,499 | Walmart: $1,499Reviews consensus: There is no doubt that the Celestron NexStar 8 SE is a fantastic telescope; it pairs Celestron’s legendary orange tube with a fully computerized GoTo system—ideal for those ready to step up from manual scopes and explore more o

Cockroach Janta Party founder to return to India on Jun 6

Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) spokespeople Vijeta Dahiya, Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka attend a news conference in New Delhi, on June 3, 2026. | Photo Credit: Reuters The Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) will hold a protest on June 6 at Jantar Mantar in the capital, demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, the movement’s spokespersons said at its first press conference on Wednesday (June 3, 2026). “We seek minimum accountability from this system where rot has set in,” said spokesperson Saurav Das.Mr. Pradhan has taken flak in recent days due to the paper leaks and cancellation of NEET-UG, the medical entrance examination, and problems with the Central Board of Secondary Education’s new on-screen marking evaluation system for the Class 12 examination.Abhijeet Dipke, who started the CJP social media accounts last month, garnering millions of followers, will arrive in Delhi from the U.S. on Saturday morning. He will then approach the Parliament Street police station seeking permission to protest at Jantar Mantar, said Mr. Das, a journalist who joined two others as CJP spokespersons this week.‘Protest without party banners’Mr. Das dismissed the transfers of the CBSE Chairman and Secretary as a mere “eyewash”, adding that “the government is not talking to us no matter how hard we try.” He asked people from every political background to attend the June 6 protest “without their party or organisational banners,” to call for Mr. Pradhan’s resignation.“We’re in absurd times where I have to explain why [Mr. Pradhan] must resign,” said Vijeta Dahiya, another spokesperson who also works as a filmmaker. “We have this absurd notion of democracy; vote once every five years, choose kings, and think about the next election. Democracy has to be dynamic. Our representatives should represent our wants, needs, and concerns. We haven’t chosen kings but employees. If they don’t do their work, they must be questioned.”Mr. Das refused to commit the CJP, which has gained over 22 million followers on Instagram, to any other positions at this stage. “It’s a 15-day old movement that started as satire,” he said. “We have seen irregularities in five exams. This is our priority for now. After this too, we will continuously connect with the youth and raise issues,” he added. Published - June 03, 2026 08:08 pm IST

Fired Scott Pelley accuses CBS of trying to ‘curry favour’ with Trump — ‘Good people were silenced...’

Scott Pelley, a longtime 60 Minutes correspondent who was fired by CBS News, has accused the network’s new executives of trying to “curry favour” with the Donald Trump administration. In a public statement, Pelley also claimed that they instructed him “to inject falsehoods and bias” into his reporting. In a lengthy social media statement, Pelley wrote: “‘60’ has been the number-one program in America for decades because our beloved audience finds integrity, quality, and humanity in our stories.”“When stewardship of the program passed to my colleagues and me, our responsibility was to expand energetically into a new age of media technology while preserving the values our audience expects,” he said. “Now, the new owner of our network is casting this legend aside, apparently to curry a moment of favor with the Trump administration.”Pelley also criticised the new leadership at CBS, saying that 60 Minutes “lost its DNA” last month “when our entire senior leadership and two of our best on-air correspondents were cruelly fired without cause.”“Good people were silenced because they stood up for our audience. They stood for fairness against the forces of political bias; they stood for professionalism against chaos,” he said.Pelley also said that new management instructed him “to inject falsehoods and bias into a politically sensitive story.” “I’ve been told to include assertions that are unverified. To date, in every case, I have managed to ignore these instructions or refuse them,” he said.“Recently, politicians have been invited to choose correspondents for interviews on the broadcast. Giving politicians control over 60 Minutes interviews is not how this is done,” the fired correspondent said. “Finally, incompetence and unprofessionalism in the new management have wreaked havoc.”Pelley claimed that for one of his stories, “the entire program came within 19 minutes of not getting on the air at all.”He concluded his statement by saying that he was departing “after 37 years at CBS with one emotion – a heart brimming with gratitude for the men and women of CBS News who encouraged and enriched my work, very often at the risk of their own lives.”“I pray for a day when those people and their ideals are honoured again – a day when sanity, competence, and courage return,” he said.Bari Weiss on Scott Pelley’s termination“…I’m only interested in working in a newsroom that is built on trust and mutual respect. We cannot do our work without it,” Bari Weiss said in a meeting, according to the Guardian."That foundation was broken on Monday, and despite our attempts to engage with Scott Pelley and to find a way back, unfortunately we weren’t able to do so, and so we had to part ways,” she said of Scott Pelley’s termination.Weiss said CBS does not want that to happen, “but that’s the path that he chose.”“That unfortunate outcome does not discount the amazing contributions and work that Scott Pelley has done for CBS and for 60 Minutes over the course of his career,” she added, while listing some of his stories from the past season and calling them “unforgettable stories”.Bari Weiss ‘murdering 60 Minutes’: Scott PelleyScott Pelley's 22-year run on the show came to an end after he was terminated on Tuesday after clashing with the new network leadership.Last week, CBS News leadership fired 60 Minutes’ executive producer, executive editor, and two top correspondents without cause or explanation. Tensions boiled over during a high-stakes meeting on Monday featuring newly minted executive editor Nick Bilton.During the confrontation, Pelley launched a direct verbal assault against Bari Weiss, the former opinion commentator tapped to lead the network as editor-in-chief last October. He was fired the next day.“She’s murdering 60 Minutes,” Pelley said, the Guardian reported. “She does not love this place. She was brought in to kill it and is doing exactly that.”Pelley was informed of his termination the following day, in a message from Bilton, who reportedly call

‘Will be taken to Tihar’: CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke fears arrest on landing in Delhi after Govt action on X handle

A major fire ripped through a bed-and-breakfast facility in the densely populated Malviya Nagar area of South Delhi early on Wednesday, leaving at least 21 people dead, including 17 foreign nationals, and injuring several others. The tragedy took place at 8:48 am.As investigators intensified their probe into the tragedy, a team of Delhi Police officers visited the residence of Lovkesh Bajaj, co-owner of Hotel Flourish Stays, after preliminary findings pointed to serious breaches of building regulations and fire safety norms at the property.Delhi Police said said they issued LoC (Look out circular) against Bajaj and other accused. This will reportedly be done as a measure to ensure that they do not flee abroad. The visit formed part of a broader investigation into the deadly blaze, with authorities examining possible violations related to fire safety compliance, structural approvals, and emergency evacuation arrangements at the hotel. The Delhi Police constituted several teams to locate the hotel owner and carried out raids at multiple locations across the national capital as part of the ongoing investigation.25 rooms built instead of 6 allowed, fire reportedly started on ground floor and moreOfficials said the hotel where the fire occurred had approval to operate only six rooms under the bed-and-breakfast (B&B) scheme. However, investigators found that the owner had allegedly expanded the facility to 25 rooms. Authorities also identified similar violations at Green Residency Hotel, situated about 100 metres from the site of the blaze, which was authorised to run six rooms but was allegedly operating 28.Preliminary findings from the Delhi Fire Services indicate that the fire may have started near the staircase on the ground floor. Investigators suspect that combustible material stored in the area could have been the source of the blaze, which subsequently spread rapidly throughout the building.Officials said the exact cause of the fire, as well as the nature of the material believed to have triggered it, will only be determined after a comprehensive forensic examination.ANI sources also alleged that all the windows in the building had been sealed, severely restricting escape routes for occupants as the fire rapidly intensified.Firefighters discovered LPG cylinders inside the premises during the rescue operation. However, according to preliminary assessments, the blaze is believed to have originated from material stored near the staircase before spreading quickly through the building, sources mentioned.A detailed investigation, including forensic examinations, is currently being carried out to determine the precise circumstances that led to the tragedy.Meanwhile, former Delhi Fire Services Director Atul Garg described the incident as "very unfortunate" and highlighted the structural and civic issues prevalent in the area."More than 22 people have died, and this is a very unfortunate incident. This is a very congested area where fire tenders cannot move easily. There is no water source available, and encroachments have made firefighting difficult. Many houses have only one staircase. A lot of smoke was there, and people did not get time to come out. That's the reason why so many people died. Since they had no NOC and other things, I think there were no safety measures available there," Garg stated.Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA from Malviya Nagar Satish Upadhyay said strict action would be taken against those found responsible for violating safety norms, stating, "An inquiry will be conducted, and anyone who has broken norms and is responsible will be immediately arrested. Other B&Bs, hotels and guest houses that are not following protocols will be sealed."Amid the ongoing investigation, distraught relatives of the victims voiced anger and frustration over delays in obtaining information about their loved ones."Max Hospital said that 2-4 bodies are here, but no one tells us anything much more than that. Airbnb-backed WeRoad raises $58M to take its group travel platform to the US

Developer platform GitLab has laid off about 14% of its workforce, about 350 employees, as part of a broader restructuring effort it detailed last month. The company said in May that it was going to reduce its workforce as it exited 22 countries, flattened management layers, and invested in infrastructure to scale its platform and serve increased traffic from AI workflows, with a sharper focus on research and development. CEO Bill Staples said during a conference call on Tuesday that agentic workloads are stressing developer infrastructure more than it was designed to handle. It isn’t a problem unique to GitLab. The company’s rival GitHub has itself struggled to deal with a massive influx of AI-powered submissions that have affected its uptime. “Agents work at machine scale, and they’re pushing competitors to the brink. This quarter we began a generational rebuild of git to support the scale and features required for 100x growth. This is a scale requirement that didn’t exist before and has become a real pain point for every team on their agentic journey,” Staples said. Staples said the company has partnered with an unspecified AI lab to design and rebuild its infrastructure for AI workloads, as well as construct APIs “optimized for agents to store and retrieve context, including code.” It is also investing in orchestration tools for coordinating software development between AI agents and developers, building a context layer, and baking in governance tools directly into its platform. GitLab joins a number of tech companies such as Intuit, Amazon, Block, Cisco, Cloudflare, Meta, Microsoft, and Oracle that have laid off large numbers of employees, citing a need to make AI a core part of their business. The tech industry has already cut more than 100,000 jobs this year, per Statista, and is on track to outpace both 2024 and 2025 if the layoff trend continues. The pattern is by now familiar: companies are reporting record revenues while simultaneously shrinking their workforces, with AI cited as both the reason for the growth and the justification for the cuts. Indeed, all of these companies have recently reported strong revenue and profit, pointing to strong demand for AI products, services, or the infrastructure to power them, and GitLab is no exception. On Tuesday, the company reported first-quarter revenue of $264 million, up 23% from a year earlier, and gross margins of 88%. It expects to incur $30 million to $35 million in restructuring expenses as part of the effort. When you purchase through links in our articles, we may earn a small commission. Rocket engine startup Impulse raises $500 million to hire people, not AI

Customer support and service are among the hottest sectors in voice AI right now. But building a product that sounds human and responds without noticeable delay turns out to be much harder in some markets than others — and most of the major players weren’t built with Africa and the Middle East in mind. AethexAI, a startup founded last year to close that gap, has raised $3 million in pre-seed funding led by 4DX Ventures, with participation from Enza Capital, Dorm Room Fund, Mojo Ventures, and Stanford GSB 26 Fund. Individual investors include Stanford faculty, telecom executives, and AI researchers from Anthropic. Rather than using existing orchestration tools like Vapi and LiveKit, the company built its own small model and orchestration layer from scratch to handle the localized dialects of English, French, and Arabic spoken across its target markets — a decision driven, as we’ll get to, by the particular demands of operating in the region. The company is also launching its platform for enterprises to try out its tech and sign up for its services, along with APIs and SDKs for developers to experiment with its models. The startup was founded by Mariama Diallo and Ayooluwa Odemuyiwa. CEO Diallo worked at Goldman Sachs and later joined YC-backed ModelML as a product and growth hire. CTO Odemuyiwa graduated from Caltech, worked at Meta, and enrolled at Stanford Business School before co-founding the company. The pair wanted to build something for emerging markets and started looking for opportunities. Businesses around the world are racing to adopt AI tools to automate parts of their operations. But that doesn’t always work out. In Egypt, a call center automated a significant share of its calls, but rolled the system back because of poor results, the founders found. Several support centers in Africa told them that finding and hiring engineers to automate calls at the right cost was a persistent headache. “The latency and jitter that we saw on automated calls in this region were outrageous. If we had become orchestrators, we might have had to use large models that were hosted outside the region, resulting in higher latency. We realized that in order for this to work, we have to use very small models and cut latency at every step,” Odemuyiwa told TechCrunch about the decision to build the company’s own models and orchestration layer. AI labs that deploy their latest models usually spend millions training them and acquiring data. AethexAI found a solution for both. Rather than chasing the largest possible models, it decided that small models are enough to tackle the latency problem while maintaining accuracy and developed its own Kora series, with parameters ranging from 300 million to 1.7 billion. That’s a fraction of the size of the LLMs, which is precisely the point. To train these models, the startup used anonymized recordings from a call center partner. It also shipped hard drives to radio stations across Africa to collect more audio data. To keep costs down, it built a contributor network of university students to annotate data and pronounce local names. As a result, the startup says, it’s now handling more than 17,000 calls per day.
